Region profile

History

Romans documented winemaking in 3rd century. 11th century Roncesvalles Abbey monks planted vines for pilgrims on Way of St James. Peak production 17th century (500ha) under Viscount of Urdos encouragement. Devastated by phylloxera 1912. By 1980s only 70ha remained. Cooperative formed 1952 under Alexandre Bergouignan; AOVDQS 1953, AOC October 1970.

Pyrenean mountain; 200-400m altitude; sandstone and Jurassic limestone; EXTREME slopes up to 60° requiring special terracing techniques
Signature wines
Domaine Brana - benchmark organic producer in St-Jean-Pied-de-Port; also makes excellent eau-de-vie. Cooperative Irouléguy produces 70% of appellation. Price: $20-35.
