History
Eloi Dürrbach began planting vines in the Alpilles in 1973, studying 19th-century texts from Doctor Guyot that proved Cabernet Sauvignon grew here before phylloxera. His parents - artists Jacqueline and René Dürrbach, friends of Picasso and Léger - had bought the land with money from a Guernica tapestry commission for Nelson Rockefeller. The first Trévallon vintage (1976) with 50% Cabernet/50% Syrah became legendary. But when INAO created the Les Baux AOC in 1995, they limited Cabernet to 20% - deliberately excluding Trévallon, which refused to change. The Dürrbachs chose IGP status over compromising their vision. Eloi died in 2021; son Antoine continues.
- Climate
- Mediterranean with strong Mistral influence; the Alpilles mountains create a unique microclimate; limestone and sandstone soils at 100-300m elevation; warm days, cool nights
- Signature wines
- Domaine de Trévallon Rouge IGP Alpilles - technically NOT Les Baux anymore, but the estate that PUT THIS REGION ON THE MAP; 50% Cabernet/50% Syrah; organic since 1973; whole-cluster fermentation, natural yeasts; 2 years in foudre; the Dürrbachs proved Provence could rival Bordeaux; ~€50 for one of southern France's greatest wines
- What sets it apart
- France's first fully organic appellation created an ironic tragedy - the very estate (Trévallon) that proved this terroir's greatness was excluded from the AOC for staying true to its vision; 30 years of 100% organic farming when most regions are just starting
Facts
- Only 277 hectares with just 12 estates - one of France's SMALLEST AOCs
- 100% organic/biodynamic since 1995 - FIRST French appellation to achieve this
- produces only 4,200-4,400 hectoliters annually
- Domaine de Trévallon was EXPELLED from the AOC in 1993 for having too much Cabernet (now IGP Alpilles)
