History

The name "La Livinière" means "place planted with vines," first documented in 1069. Maurice Piccinini (Cooperative president) and Roger Piquet led a decade-long campaign lobbying INAO after Minervois gained AOC status in 1985. Success came in 1999 when La Livinière became Languedoc's first Cru, setting the template for Boutenac (2005) and others. The six villages (La Livinière, Azillanet, Azille, Cesseras, Félines-Minervois, Siran) united around this distinction. In March 2024, the EU registered the simplified name "AOP La Livinière," dropping "Minervois."

Climate
South-facing vineyards at 220m elevation on the Petit Causse foothills of the Montagne Noire; limestone and schist soils; 2,700 hectares classified but only ~400 planted; garrigue influence
Signature wines
Clos Centeilles "Campagne de Centeilles" - Patricia Boyer-Domergue's family has been among the long-standing pioneers keeping the La Livinière flag flying. Located in the heart of the appellation, the domaine produces structured, mineral-driven wines from Rhône varieties that rival northern Rhône quality at Languedoc prices. Around $25-35.
What sets it apart
La Livinière proved Languedoc could produce serious, age-worthy wine worthy of Cru status. The brutal tasting panel (30-40% rejection) maintains standards higher than anywhere else in France. When Lynch-Bages (L'Ostal Cazes) and Gérard Bertrand (Clos d'Ora) chose where to invest in Languedoc, they chose here.

Facts

  • The La Livinière tasting panel rejects 30-40% of all wines submitted - the highest rejection rate of any appellation in France (national average: ~5%). If your wine isn't good enough, it gets declassified to basic Minervois.
