History

Pliny the Elder praised this Muscat in Naturalis Historia (1st century AD). King Louis IX took it on 7th Crusade (1248). Pope Clement V (1264-1314) planted 70 hectares to supply Avignon papal court. French Wars of Religion nearly destroyed vineyards. AOC granted 1943. Elevated to cru status 2005 alongside dry red Beaumes-de-Venise - highest honor in Rhône Valley.
