History

Piquepoul is one of the Languedoc's oldest domestic varieties alongside Cinsault and Clairette, first mentioned in the 14th century. Originally a black grape, Piquepoul Blanc descended from Brun Fourca, an almost extinct Provençal variety. Plantings crashed to just 50 hectares before Étienne Farras became president of the Pinet Wine Cooperative in 1963, the same year France developed this coast for tourism. The quality renaissance began. AOC status came in 1985, and today 24 independent domaines plus cooperatives produce this singular wine.

Signature wines
Domaine Gaujal "Picpoul de Pinet" - Laurent and Audrey Gaujal are the 11th generation to helm this estate, owned by the family since 1744. Located in Pinet itself (one of six permitted communes), their Picpoul is rated among the appellation's finest. The Gaujals experiment with sandstone amphorae and acacia barrels, redefining Picpoul from easy-drinking coastal white to serious gastronomic wine. Around $12-20.
What sets it apart
The only Languedoc appellation for white wine exclusively, and one of very few French AOCs permitting a single variety. Order a dozen oysters from the Thau lagoon, pour a glass of Picpoul from the vines overlooking that same lagoon - this is terroir synergy at its most delicious.

Facts

  • The Étang de Thau lagoon bordering the vineyards produces half of France's oysters - 13,000 tonnes annually from 2,750 oyster tables. Picpoul de Pinet is so linked to shellfish that Australian growers call Piquepoul "the oyster grape."
