Region profile

History

Named after commune Saint-Julien-Beychevelle. Léoville estate once covered entire appellation before French Revolution division into three châteaux (Las Cases, Barton, Poyferré). Langoa Barton and Léoville Barton remain only châteaux in same family since 1855 Classification. Johnston family invented Bordeaux mixture (bouillie bordelaise) in 1878 at Ducru-Beaucaillou.

Climate
Deep Günz gravel beds 6-8m deep on tertiary substrate; Gironde proximity creates frost-protected microclimate; 910 hectares - only 6% of Médoc but highest classified terroir ratio
Signature wines
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou - "beautiful stones" terroir, Borie family since 1941, Super Second status; Château Léoville Las Cases - largest of three Léovilles, borders Latour, consistently First Growth quality

Highest ratio of classified terroir in Bordeaux; "goldilocks" appellation between Pauillac power and Margaux finesse; home to three Léoville châteaux split from single revolutionary-era estate
