History
Still wines mentioned by Pliny (Natural History Book XIV) and Plutarch (Table Talk) 2,000 years ago. In 1829, Louis-Alexandre Faure produced first sparkling Saint-Péray using méthode traditionnelle. Napoleon Bonaparte claimed his first wine experience was Saint-Péray as a young cadet in Valence. Richard Wagner famously ordered 100 bottles from Bayreuth in 1877.

- Southernmost Northern Rhône on right bank opposite Valence; granite-based soils with limestone on hillsides at 100-300m; Ardèche mountains create slightly warmer mesoclimate
- Signature wines
- Domaine Alain Voge "Les Bulles d'Alain" Saint-Péray Brut - legendary Cornas vigneron since 1962. His Fleur de Crussol still wine is benchmark. Also: M. Chapoutier "La Muse de RW" - named for Wagner who allegedly never paid. Price: $25-40 sparkling, $35-60 still.
- What sets it apart
- Only Northern Rhône appellation producing both still AND sparkling white wines. In 19th century, Saint-Péray sparkling commanded Champagne prices and graced tables of Russian Tsars, Queen Victoria, and Napoleon. Criminally undervalued today.
Facts
- Wagner's Saint-Péray letter from Bayreuth is dated December 2, 1877 - he ordered 100 bottles of sparkling and allegedly never paid. Only 98 hectares under vine - Crozes-Hermitage is 18 times larger.
