History

The Abbey of Aniane, founded by Saint Benedict in 782 and nicknamed the "mother" of European Benedictine abbeys, established viticulture here. The Abbey of Gellone at Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert (early 9th century) expanded plantings. Modern renaissance began when geologist Henri Enjalbert discovered glacial terroir at Aniane in 1971. Aimé Guibert planted Mas de Daumas Gassac in 1974, followed by Olivier Jullien's Mas Jullien in 1985 and Laurent Vaillé's Grange des Pères in 1992. "Terrasses du Larzac" was formalized within Coteaux du Languedoc in 2004, then achieved full independent AOC status on June 26, 2014.

Signature wines
Mas Jullien "Autour de Jonquières" - Olivier Jullien, alongside Grange des Pères and Daumas Gassac, reimagined Languedoc as fine wine territory from 1985. His biodynamic estate in Jonquières produces wines of startling elegance that age like great Rhône. The Mas Jullien red, a field blend of Mediterranean varieties, combines depth with the signature Larzac freshness. Around $35-50.

Wine critic Andrew Jefford wrote: "Where is the greatest terroir in Languedoc? I would look most closely at Terrasses du Larzac." The altitude-driven temperature swing creates wines that taste more Rhône than Mediterranean - with freshness, acidity, and aging potential unknown elsewhere in the south.

Facts

  • Temperature swings of 20°C between day and night in summer - cold air pours off the Larzac plateau, dropping temperatures from a daytime 22°C to 2°C overnight. This creates wines with acidity levels unheard of in the Mediterranean, preserving complexity and enabling 10-20 year aging.
