Aglianico del Vulture DOC
🇮🇹 Italy
DOCDOC 1971 - Base tier of Vulture Aglianico, entry-level "Barolo of the South", larger production vs DOCG, excellent QPR
Region profile
History
Greeks introduced Aglianico 7th-6th century BC. Romans prized Vulture wines - Horace born Venosa 65 BC. Monte Vulture volcano created unique terroir. DOC 1971 established (among first southern DOCs, same year as Salice Salentino). 2010: DOCG created for premium Superiore/Riserva, leaving DOC as broader base tier. DOC allows earlier release (1 year vs 3 years), making wines more approachable and affordable. Modern era: quality explosion, excellent value proposition.
