History

Greeks introduced Aglianico 7th-6th century BC (name from "Hellenic"). Romans prized local wines - Horace born in Venosa 65 BC praised his homeland wines. Legend: after defeating Romans 212 BC, Hannibal sent wounded soldiers to Lucania (Basilicata) to heal with Vulture wines. Monte Vulture volcano created unique mineral-rich terroir. Region remained isolated for centuries, preserving ancient practices. DOC recognition 1971 (Aglianico del Vulture). August 2010: Superiore variant elevated to DOCG, Basilicata's first and only. Elena Fucci (originally architecture student) took over family winery, became modern icon with Titolo single-vineyard bottling. Paternoster continues historic tradition.
