History

Barbera believed native to Monferrato hills. First documented 1246-1277 in Casale Monferrato cathedral records as "de bonis vitibus barbexinis". Officially listed 1798 by Count Nuvolone, deputy director Agrarian Society of Turin. Post-phylloxera (late 1800s), Barbera chosen for replanting due to rapid growth, high yields, disease resistance. DOC 1970. Giacomo Bologna of Braida, inspired by 1978 California visit, started "Barbera revolution" - best sites, low yields, barrique aging. Son and daughter now run estate. Barbera now most widely planted red grape in Piedmont.
