Region profile
History
Considered by some experts as original birthplace of Nebbiolo grape. In 19th century Boca was "the top" - Barolo at that time was light frizzante at 8% alcohol, while Boca was always made to age. DOC established 1969. Cà Finazzi started producing in 18th century. Region declined from 40,000ha (more than Champagne's 34,000ha) to mere 3 commercial hectares at lowest point due to mildews, phylloxera, WWI/WWII. Guido and Cristiana Sertorio bought old Cà Finazzi winery 1980, revived as Podere ai Valloni - first registered Boca DOC producer, first vintage 1983.
- Climate
- Continental Alto Piemonte; sits above exact tip of 280-million-year-old Valsesia supervolcano; Permian-age volcanic porphyry rock, stony poor soils; UNESCO Valsesia Valgrande geopark; vineyards up to 480m (500m max); mineral-rich acidic volcanic deposits
- Signature wines
- Podere ai Valloni Vigna Cristiana (benchmark, first DOC producer 1983, 70/20/10 blend, 3-year oak, 480m old vines 35-65 years, organic since 2014); Barbaglia Boca (neoclassical benchmark, finesse of great Barbaresco); Davide Carlone; Vallana; Castello Conti
- What sets it apart
- Exact tip of 280-million-year-old Valsesia supervolcano (UNESCO geopark); rock so old it breaks by hand; 19th century "the top" (Barolo was 8% frizzante then); possibly Nebbiolo birthplace; smallest Alto Piemonte DOC at ~20ha (dropped to 3ha at nadir); volcanic mineral austerity unique character; Podere ai Valloni first DOC producer 1983; DOC 1969
