History
First documented 1447. Name means "to yearn for the land" - freed feudal serfs began cultivating vines. DOC awarded 1979. Known as "vino dei Canonici" due to popularity among Vercellese clergy. Pre-WWII production exceeded Barolo; Roasio commune alone had 300ha. Alto Piemonte declined from 40,000ha to <800ha by end of WWII. Antoniotti family has made wine since 1860s in Casa del Bosco (Sostegno). Italy's first bottled wines from this area (Lessona, Gattinara, Ghemme) - Gattinara internationally known 200 years before first Barolo bottled.
