History

Brindisi was Roman gateway to the East (terminus of Via Appia); amphorae marked "Brundisium" found in ancient shipwrecks; wine traded alongside salt and olive oil from Mediterranean provinces. From Latin "Brundisium"; city served as Rome's principal eastern port. DOC established 1979. Sussumaniello grape rescued from near-extinction now thriving in local blends. 2010: Cantine Risveglio won Decanter World Wine Challenge category prize (first Puglian cooperative).
