History
Carlo Gancia returned from Champagne apprenticeship 1850, experimented with bottle fermentation in Canelli, invented "Moscato Champagne" circa 1865 - birth of Italian sparkling wine industry. Canelli became the cradle of Italian spumante production. Underground wine cathedrals of Gancia, Bosca, Contratto, Coppo cellars carved into hillsides became UNESCO World Heritage Sites 2014. Historic core area of Moscato d'Asti separated into own DOCG 2023 (78th Italian DOCG). 17 municipalities around Canelli town officially recognized as historic birthplace. First bottles with Canelli DOCG label released 2023 harvest (e.g., Coppo Moncalvina Moscato).
