Cannonau di Sardegna

🇮🇹 Italy

DOC

DOC 1972 - Sardinia's flagship red, island-wide appellation, Blue Zone centenarian link, 7,500 hectares, possibly world's OLDEST Grenache (3,200-year-old grape pips found)

Region profile

History

Nuragic civilization (Bronze Age) cultivated vines in Sardinia 3,500+ years ago. Archaeological discovery at Borore (Nuoro province) found 3,200-year-old grape pips genetically linked to modern Cannonau - suggesting Sardinia may be birthplace of entire Grenache family (challenging Spanish origin theory). Phoenicians and Carthaginians expanded viticulture. Spanish rule (1323-1720) named grape "Cannonau" (from Canonazo cannon, referring to powerful wine). DOC recognition 1972 as island-wide appellation. Modern: Blue Zone research linked Cannonau consumption to exceptional longevity in Sardinian mountain villages.

Climate
Mediterranean climate across entire Sardinian island; hot dry summers; persistent Mistral winds moderate temperatures and reduce disease pressure; granite, schist, and limestone soils depending on subzone; 23 designated subzones (sottozone) including Oliena, Jerzu, Nepente di Oliena; oldest vines on bush-trained alberello systems; drought-adapted viticulture; sea breezes on coastal areas
Signature wines
Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva DOC (Argiolas Turriga - flagship Super Sardinian, 85% Cannonau blend; Ferruccio Deiana Ajana; Sella & Mosca); Nepente di Oliena subzone (poetic name from Homer's nepenthe - "grief-banishing" wine); deep ruby color; wild herbs, Mediterranean scrub (macchia), red berries, leather; earthy, mineral character; traditionally high alcohol 14-15%+; pairs with Sardinian roast suckling pig (porcheddu), aged pecorino
What sets it apart
DOC 1972 (island-wide, 7,500 hectares); Blue Zone centenarian link - 2-3x more flavonoids than other red wines; 3,200-year-old grape pips found (possibly world's OLDEST Grenache - Sardinia may be birthplace); 23 designated subzones; Nepente di Oliena most prestigious (Homer reference); alberello bush vine traditional; Spanish named it "Cannonau" (cannon = powerful wine); Argiolas Turriga benchmark Super Sardinian
