History

Pope Paul III's bottler Farnese recognized Carema 1539 as "excellent and perfect drink for Princes and Lords." DOC specifications established 1967. Luigi Ferrando built cellar 1957, began international exports. Cantina dei Produttori Nebbiolo di Carema cooperative founded 1960 by 10 resident winemakers. 1998 regulations allowed 15% other grapes and added Riserva/Classico terms. 2012-2019 new wave revival: Sorpasso, Muraje (2012), Monte Maletto (2014), Chiussuma (2016), Sopravvento (2019). Without younger generation, the labor-intensive terraced viticulture faces extinction risk.
