Region profile

History

Viticulture on Karst since ancient times. Terrano = "blood of the Carso" - historically considered medicinal for iron content. Malvasia Istriana traditional primary white. 1980s: Vitovska revival began (previously minor variety); Edi Kante carved remarkable 3-level cellar into limestone bedrock for temperature-controlled aging. DOC 1985. 2004: Skerlj siblings began organic production. Modern era: Carso became globally influential in natural wine movement despite minuscule size. Whole-berry maceration (skin contact) traditional here - one of only two Italian regions with this ancient practice (other = Oslavia). Cross-border terroir with Slovenia's Kras region.
