Ancient viticulture on Murge plateau. 1240: Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II built octagonal Castel del Monte fortress. 1996: UNESCO World Heritage designation. 1971: Castel del Monte DOC established - Puglia's FIRST DOC. Rivera family connection to Frederick II: noble family whose founder was captain to Emperor. 2011: Three DOCGs created. 2019: Torrevento received Gambero Rosso "Award for Sustainable Viticulture."
