🇮🇹 Italy

DOC

DOC 2010 - Italy's FIRST rosé-only DOC, "cherry" color from Montepulciano, separated from red DOC after 42 years, serious food wine not summer sipper

Region profile

History

Cerasuolo (cherry-colored rosé) traditional Abruzzo style for centuries. Made alongside red Montepulciano using same grape with brief skin contact. 1968: included within Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC as sub-style. For 42 years, labeled "Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Cerasuolo." October 2010: separated as own DOC - Italy's first denomination exclusively for rosé wines. Recognition of distinct identity: not a byproduct but intentional style. Deep color distinguishes from Provence-style pale rosés. Modern: serious food wine gaining international recognition.
