Medieval Chianti League (13th century) protected territory during Florence-Siena dispute; Gaiole, Radda, Castellina formed three strongholds represented by Black Rooster. Cosimo III de' Medici legally defined Chianti 1716 - world's first wine appellation. DOCG status 1984. Gran Selezione classification introduced 2014 requiring estate grapes and 30 months aging.
