Cosimo III de' Medici 1716 edict (first wine appellation) defined original Chianti including Rufina area. Frescobaldi family presence 700+ years, Nipozzano estate documented 1000+ years. Name from ancient Rufina town. 19th century: recognized as premium zone. 1932: officially designated subzone. 1984: DOCG status. Selvapiana (1827) unbroken family ownership 6 generations.
