Region profile

History

Viticulture since Roman era. 1866: unified with Italy during Risorgimento. Mid-1800s: phylloxera + powdery mildew devastated indigenous varieties; farmers replanted with Merlot, Cabernet. By 1960s: fewer than 100 Schioppettino vines remained, Pignolo/Tazzelenghe near extinction. 1970: Paolo Rapuzzi began quest to save Schioppettino, found 70 vines near Prepotto/Slovenia border. Rapuzzi faced government opposition - grape wasn't legally registered. 1970s: Girolamo Dorigo simultaneously revived Pignolo. DOC 1970. 1973: Consorzio founded. 1978: EEC regulation authorized Schioppettino, Pignolo, Tazzelenghe in Udine province. 1989: Schioppettino earned official DOC status. 2008: Schioppettino di Prepotto subzone created. Modern nurseries now propagate from Rapuzzi's rescued vines.
