History

DOC established 1973, just before neighboring Gavi. Timorasso grown since medieval times, rivaled Cortese in 19th century. Varietals like Timorasso nearly lost to emigration, world wars, fascism, phylloxera mid-20th century. Walter Massa "The Prophet" rescued Timorasso from extinction 1978-1987, planted Costa del Vento vineyard 1990. First commercial vintage 570 bottles 1987. Derthona trademarked 2000 by producer consortium (Roman name for Tortona). Italian wine experts now consider Timorasso among Italy's best whites.
