History

Viticulture since Roman era; Collio means "hills" in Friulian dialect. Medieval period: wines traded through Venice. Habsburg era: became Austria-Hungary's premier white wine source. 1866: phylloxera devastation. Post-WWII: Mario Schiopetto ("father of modern Collio") revolutionized winemaking with temperature-controlled fermentation, clean varietal expression (1960s-70s). DOC 1968 (Italy's 3rd). 1990s: Josko Gravner + Stanko Radikon rejected modern winemaking, rediscovered extended skin contact and ancient techniques. Gravner visited Georgia 1997, adopted qvevri (buried amphorae). This sparked global orange wine movement. 2007: EU ruled against "Tocai" name (Hungarian claim), renamed to "Friulano". 2025: orange wines officially added to DOC regulations after decades as "controversial".
