History

DOC established 1993 for area south of Palermo. Donnafugata winery project began 1983 under Giacomo Rallo with wife Gabriella and children Antonio and José. Estate at Contessa Entellina = 280 hectares representing winery's heart. International varieties (Chardonnay, Cabernet, Merlot) introduced alongside indigenous grapes. 1995: first vintage of Mille e una Notte (flagship red, name = "Thousand and One Nights" Arabian tales tribute). Chiarandà Chardonnay became benchmark Sicilian white. Donnafugata expanded to Pantelleria (Ben Ryé passito) and Etna. Family maintains artistic label tradition - each wine tells visual story.
