History
Copertino town named from "coopertum" (covered/vaulted) for underground granaries. Saint Joseph of Cupertino (1603-1663, "flying saint" - levitation miracles) born here. Wine production since medieval times. Norman-Swabian castle (13th century) dominates town. 1976: DOC established among Salento's first. Cantine Due Palme (founded 1989) pioneered modern quality. Cosimo Taurino legendary producer (Patriglione bottling). Modern: recognized as one of finest Negroamaro expressions.
