Greeks and Romans planted vines on Amalfi terraces - Roman writers documented wine as central to local culture. Early Medieval settlement expanded terracing. 10th-11th century: Duchy/Maritime Republic of Amalfi flourished as trading power, exported wine. Terraced hillsides represent centuries of agricultural adaptation to dramatic topography. UNESCO listed Costiera Amalfitana 1997 as "outstanding cultural landscape with exceptional cultural and natural scenic values." DOC established August 1995. Modern quality revival led by Marisa Cuomo (Furore, woman-run), Cantine Caruso (Ravello since 1896), Tenuta San Francesco (Tramonti, pre-phylloxera vines).
