History

Dolcetto documented in Piedmont since at least 11th century - competing theories place origin in either France (brought to Monferrato) or native to Dogliani village. DOC recognized July 6, 1974, making it one of earlier Piedmont appellations. Historically served as "everyday wine" for vineyard workers while Barolo/Barbaresco aged in cellars. Name means "little sweet one" though wine is dry - refers to grape's sweetness at harvest. Many top Barolo producers (Mascarello, Vietti, Conterno) make Dolcetto d'Alba as accessible introduction to their estates. Planted on less-favored sites below prime Nebbiolo vineyards.
