History

Viticulture dating to Ancient Greece; mentioned by Pliny the Elder in Naturalis Historia (77 AD); archaeological evidence from 4th century BC. Helorus was ancient Greek (later Roman) city in modern Noto commune. Nero d'Avola named for nearby Avola - this is the grape's birthplace. DOC 1994. Gulfi pioneered single-vineyard (Cru) Nero d'Avola concept in Pachino; credited as "first to make Cru wines from distinct zones" (Ian D'Agata).

Climate
Warm Mediterranean tempered by dual sea influence (Ionian and Mediterranean); hot dry summers with minimal July-August rain; mild winters; 36°N latitude would be challenging without sea moderation; mostly coastal plains with northern hills toward Noto; limestone-clay with marine fossil deposits, pH 5.5-6.0; white limestone soils produce elegant structured wines
