History

DOC recognition August 1968, first Sicily DOC. Greeks colonized Sicily 1,800-500 BC, vines already growing (Nerello Mascalese ancient indigenous). Late 19th century: 52,000 hectares vines, bulk wine export through port. 1980s collapse: few producers remained. Modern Etna kick-started 1998 by Dr Giuseppe Benanti (pharmacist, chose local varieties). 2000s pioneers: Andrea Franchetti (Passopisciaro), Marc de Grazia (Tenuta delle Terre Nere), Frank Cornelissen (natural wines). 2011 Italian government decree recognized 133 contrade (historic crus), legal cru names on labels. 2024: volcanic wine renaissance, DOCG application pending, 440+ producers, global acclaim.
