History

Ancient Romans considered Falernum their finest wine - "first growth" of antiquity. Produced on Monte Massico (Latin: Falernus) slopes where legend says Bacchus transformed the hills into vineyards. Three vineyard zones recognized: Caucinian (highest), Faustian (most famous, central slopes), plain Falernian. 121 BC Opimian vintage (named for consul Opimius) became Rome's legendary vintage - cellars held bottles for 100+ years. Wine disappeared after classical period. 1950s revival: Francesco Paolo Avallone, lawyer and Roman Law professor at University of Naples, conducted decade-long ampelographical search with agricultural scientists. Found 20 surviving pre-phylloxera vines in small Caserta farms. Moio (Mondragone 1950s) and Villa Matilde Avallone (Cellole 1970s) pioneered modern production. DOC established 1989. Today: 70% of wineries run by young owners under 30.
