History

Evidence of viticulture 14th century BC from Aeolian Islands archaeological discoveries. Julius Caesar celebrated third consulship with Mamertino wine from Messina. Wine scene flourished under House of Aragon 14th century. Peak production 18th century. Phylloxera devastated early 20th century - vineyard area collapsed to 1/10th. DOC 1976 established but nearly revoked late 1980s - nobody making wine. 1990s revival: architect Salvatore Geraci began serious oenological project at Palari winery. 1994: first Palari vintage released - rescued DOC from deletion. Geraci: "In wines of Faro, you taste the sea, the salinity." 2002 Consorzio established. Modern renaissance with cult status wines emerging from Etna's shadow.
