History

Viticulture since Roman era; Tagliamento River deposited deep gravel beds over millennia. Post-WWII devastation: Friulians rebuilt with unbeatable resolve, creating Italy's most technically advanced wine region. DOC 1970. 1963: Pighin brothers (Ercole, Luigi, Fernando) acquired 500-acre estate, modernized with new vineyards, orchards, cellar. 2004: Fernando Pighin gained sole ownership, operating Risano (Grave) + Spessa di Capriva (Collio) estates. Region became commercially savvy, focusing on approachable Pinot Grigio and export markets. Rauscedo (world's largest vine nursery) supplies rootstock globally from this zone.
