History
Created 1996 to provide varietal labeling for 10 historic overlapping zones. Before 1996: wines sold as Riviera del Garda Bresciano (Lombardy) or Bardolino/Valpolicella/Soave (Veneto). Consortium official 2015, erga omnes recognition 2016. 2025: Major regulation update - Cremant designation, low-alcohol still wine (first in Italy), Pinot Grigio Ramato, Muller-Thurgau and Rebo varietals added.
- Climate
- Mediterranean near lakeshore, continental inland; Lake Garda (370 sq km, Italy's largest lake) moderates temperatures; good ventilation from lake breezes minimizes disease; 65-300m elevation; morainic glacial deposits; clay-limestone; gravel; 'leopard spot' pattern of clay bands and moraine; rich in mineral salts creating signature salinity
- Signature wines
- Ca'Lojera Lugana Superiore, Costaripa RosaMara Chiaretto/Molmenti Rose ('benchmark among Italian roses'), Zenato (30ha Lugana), Perla del Garda (60mo Metodo Classico), Cavalchina (pioneered Custoza name), Le Morette
- What sets it apart
- Cross-regional DOC (Lombardy + Veneto); Italy's largest lake moderates climate creating unique terroir; first Italian DOC for low-alcohol still wine (9% Garganega, 2025); Cremant designation allowed from 2025; morainic 'leopard spot' soils create signature mineral salinity; overlaps 10 historic appellations
