History

Romans cultivated vines 1st century AD. Wine-growing consolidated in Middle Ages, gained prestige 1400s-1500s. Until end 19th century, Gattinara held higher regard than Barolo or Barbaresco. Phylloxera devastated region. DOC status 1967. Antoniolo pioneered single-vineyard bottlings mid-1970s (San Francesco, Osso San Grato). DOCG recognition 1990. Roberto Conterno purchased Nervi 2018, signaling Alto Piemonte renaissance.
