Greek settlers introduced ancestor of Greco grape 8th century BC (possibly Pelasgians from Thessaly, Greece). Romans cultivated extensively - grape seeds found preserved in Vesuvius ash from 79 AD eruption. Town of Tufo named for volcanic tuff soils. Cantine di Marzo registered 1833 (oldest official Campania winery, instrumental in DOC 1970). Mastroberardino family (10 generations, founded 1878) championed native varieties post-WWII when international grapes dominated. DOC recognition 1970. DOCG elevation 2003. Irpinia now holds 3 of Campania's 4 DOCGs.
