History

Greeks established viticulture 8th century BC during Magna Graecia colonization. Romans named island "Aenaria" - land of wines. Volcanic island formed by Mount Epomeo, last eruption 1302. Traditional terraced viticulture on steep slopes using "a carraturu" low-growing vine training to capture soil warmth. 1966: Ischia Bianco became Campania's first DOC (Italy's second). Casa D'Ambra founded 1888 by Francesco "Don Ciccio" D'Ambra - now 4 generations, son Mario established benchmark status, currently run by enologist Andrea and daughters Marina/Sara. 1950s golden age: director Luchino Visconti (friend of Aunt Iolanda D'Ambra) introduced wines to Italian/international film celebrities, establishing international reputation.
