History

DOC introduced November 1994 to classify innovative wines outside traditional DOCG requirements. Langhe hills have hosted viniculture since Middle Ages - Nebbiolo documented 1266 at Rivoli castle, 1303 in Roero. Name derives from "langa" (long hill). The 1980s qualitative revolution led by Angelo Gaja and Elio Altare, who introduced barriques and low yields, created wines too innovative for existing DOCGs. Gaja famously declassified his single-vineyard Barbarescos (Sorì San Lorenzo, Sorì Tildìn, Costa Russi) to Langhe Nebbiolo 1996-2012 to blend 5% Barbera. UNESCO inscribed Langhe-Roero-Monferrato 2014 as World Heritage for vineyard landscapes.
