Region profile
History
Fertile lands supported viticulture for centuries; historically produced high-volume wines for blending. Named for town of Leverano (Salentino dialect: "Liranu"), the "town of wine, oil and flowers." DOC granted 1979. Cantina Vecchia Torre cooperative founded 1959 became driving force for quality. Recent shift from quantity to quality production.
