History

Viticulture linked to Archdiocese of Monreale and Abbey of Santa Maria La Nuova (established 1170s). 18th century: archbishopric owned 60,000 hectares, most administered directly by bishop. DOC established November 2000. Camporeale emerged as "one of the cradles of Sicilian Syrah" in recent years. Norman heritage preserved in UNESCO cathedral.
