Montefalco Rosso DOC
🇮🇹 Italy
DOC Rare findDOC 1979 - Gateway to Sagrantino, mandatory 10-15% Sagrantino blending, same Montefalco terroir as DOCG, Arnaldo Caprai led quality revolution, approachable entry wine
Region profile
History
DOC 1979 created alongside original Montefalco Sagrantino DOC (before 1992 DOCG elevation). Designed as more accessible red wine from same Montefalco terroir. Mandatory Sagrantino blending (10-15%) established to preserve unique local character while creating earlier-drinking wine. As Sagrantino gained fame (near-extinction 1970s → 994ha 2010), Montefalco Rosso grew as "gateway wine." Arnaldo Caprai and quality producers elevated both tiers. Modern: introduction to Montefalco terroir; prepares palate for tannic Sagrantino DOCG.
- Climate
- Continental climate; central Umbria hills; Perugia province; altitude 350-500 meters; same terroir as Sagrantino DOCG; warm summers, cold winters; well-drained clay-limestone soils; protected position between valleys; ideal diurnal temperature variation; suited for Sangiovese and Sagrantino
- Signature wines
- Montefalco Rosso DOC (Arnaldo Caprai - quality leader; Antonelli San Marco; Adanti; Scacciadiavoli; Perticaia; Roccafiore); ruby to garnet color; cherry, plum, violet, Mediterranean herbs; medium tannins (Sagrantino influence noticeable but integrated); fresh acidity; 12-13.5% alcohol; approachable 2-5 years; pairs with Umbrian cuisine (truffle pasta, roasted meats, lentils)
- What sets it apart
- DOC 1979; mandatory 10-15% SAGRANTINO blending (unique requirement - gateway to DOCG); same terroir as Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG; more approachable than tannic pure Sagrantino; Arnaldo Caprai quality pioneer; bridge wine for Sagrantino discovery; earlier-drinking (12 months vs 37 months DOCG); larger production volume; 5 comuni production zone; ideal introduction to Umbria's signature grape
