Region profile
History
Sagrantino indigenous only to Montefalco area (no genetic relatives found anywhere). Medieval monks cultivated for sacramental Passito wine (name possibly from "sacra" = sacred). Near-extinction by early 1970s: fewer than 10 hectares remained. 1971: Arnaldo Caprai (textile entrepreneur born Turin 1933) purchased Val di Maggio estate with 3 hectares. Son Marco Caprai took over 1987, pivoted to dry Sagrantino. Working with professor Attilio Scienza, promoted dry version (second birth of Sagrantino). DOC 1979, DOCG 1992. Estate grew to 174 hectares, 160 under vine, ~1 million bottles annually. Arnaldo Caprai passed away January 4, 2025 at age 92. Other quality producers: Antonelli, Adanti, Scacciadiavoli.
