History

DOC granted 1970, making it one of Piedmont's earlier appellations for Nebbiolo. Created to classify Nebbiolo wines from areas surrounding but outside the prestigious Barolo and Barbaresco zones. Spans both banks of Tanaro River - northern Roero hills have sandier soils creating softer, earlier-drinking wines. The designation became important for producers with vineyards just outside DOCG boundaries. Prunotto and Vietti among first to show DOC's potential with cru bottlings like Occhetti (Prunotto) in early 1960s. Now recognized as excellent value gateway to Piedmont Nebbiolo.
