Vine shoot found near Casteggio dates to prehistoric times. 225 native varieties recorded in 1884 agricultural census. 16th century: Andrea Bacci called wines 'eccellentissimi.' Mid-19th century: Pinot Nero cultivation began. DOC 1970. DOCG Metodo Classico 2007. 2025: Major updates - 'Classese' name adopted for Metodo Classico, MGA (Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive) vineyard classification system introduced.
