History

Mid-19th century: Minister Agostino Depretis recognized high hill potential for Pinot Noir, initiated introduction. 1865: Count Carlo Giorgi di Vistarino planted first Pinot Noir at Rocca de' Giorgi, collaborated with Carlo Gancia producing "Italian Champagne". Piedmontese sparkling makers saw Oltrepò as reservoir for their houses. 1930: Cantina Santa Maria della Versa first metodo classico production. 1958: Malpaga followed. DOC 1970 recognition. DOCG 2007 for Metodo Classico. 2009: Cruasé trademark registered by consortium (cru + rosé). Now 3rd largest Pinot Noir region globally. February 2025: Classese traditional name officially adopted strengthening territorial identity.

Climate
Continental with hilly terrain; Pavia province south of River Po ("Oltrepò" = beyond the Po); 13,500+ hectares vineyards; 160+ producers; varied soils (clay marl, sand, limestone slopes, gravel/alluvial plains); altitude 150-500m; warm days, cool nights preserve acidity; ideal for sparkling wine base production
