Region profile
History
Phoenicians introduced viticulture 8th century BC, possibly brought alberello training from Mediterranean trade routes. Arabs brought Zibibbo grape 8th century AD from Egypt/North Africa - "zabīb" Arabic for raisins reflects drying tradition. Volcanic island formed 200,000 years ago, closer to Tunisia than Sicily. Traditional passito-making: grapes harvested late August, dried in sun 3-4 weeks on reed mats, concentrating sugars while retaining acidity. Alberello pantesco ("vine like small tree" in Pantellerian dialect) - vines grown in hollows 60cm deep, protected from wind and salt. UNESCO 2014 recognition as Intangible Cultural Heritage - first agricultural practice honored. DOC 1971 established both Moscato di Pantelleria and Passito di Pantelleria styles. 2013 renamed to single "Pantelleria DOC" umbrella.
