History

Prosecco origins trace to village near Trieste. Glera grape cultivated in Veneto and Friuli for centuries. Prosecco DOC created to regulate large plains production distinct from premium DOCG hill zones. Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG established 2009 for historic hillside terroir (104 million bottles, UNESCO 2019). Asolo DOCG created for Mount Grappa foothills (24 million bottles). EU regulations forced "Prosecco" from grape name to geographic appellation, protecting Italian producers. DOC represents 80% of all Prosecco (500 million bottles 2020) from 23,300 hectares plains. Charmat method (metodo italiano) tank fermentation creates fresh sparkling style. Largest Italian sparkling appellation by volume.
