History

Viticulture introduced by Augustinian monks who founded Abbazia di Rosazzo (Abbey of Rosazzo) in 1068 CE. Benedictines later continued wine tradition. Abbey became cultural and agricultural center for eastern Friuli. Medieval documents record wine production. 20th century: Livio Felluga revolutionized quality, creating Terre Alte blend (first vintage 1981) which became benchmark for Italian white wines globally. Previously part of Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC. November 4, 2011: elevated to DOCG status (Friuli's third and newest DOCG). Strict regulations require minimum 4-grape blend, no single-variety wines.
