History
DOC established 1984 to give Brunello producers flexibility with younger vines. Pre-DOC tradition: ~500 hectares existed that could never produce Brunello even within appellation. Created fresher style needing only 1-year aging (vs 4-5 years Brunello) so producers could generate revenue while waiting for Brunello to age. 2024 Consorzio approved 350ha expansion (60% increase) by extending boundaries to existing Sangiovese vineyards, not new plantings.
